Hebrews 8:10 New Legal Thoughts in Their Mind

Legal Battleground

Hebrews 8:10
10… I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts…

In the old covenant legal system, there was a battleground in their minds constantly. With Gods legal system in place, and Jesus being born a Jew, he wore a Tallit or prayer shawl. This prayer shawl would have fringe or tassels, sewn around the outer edge (corners), also known as the hem of one’s garment and to remind them of God’s laws.( Numbers 15:37-41) There were 613 knots to remind them of the 613 laws of Moses, 365 thou “shall not” and 248 “thou shall” laws. It was impossible for the people to live by these laws and the priest had ongoing sacrifices to pay for the sins of the people as they continually broke the laws, even with the 613 legal reminders around their shawl.

In Romans chapter 7, Paul referred to these laws he was under before he was saved: “21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.” In these few verses, Paul is saying that he also could not live by the 613 reminders tied around the hem of his garment. This explains the battleground that was constantly in their minds.

Legal System Corrected

Paul says in Romans chapter 8 that deliverance came through Jesus, with no condemnation for those in Christ, who don’t try to live by God’s long-standing legal system.(Romans 8:1) This changes the requirement to have these law reminders in a shawl, also eliminating the requirement for ongoing sacrifices for breaking these laws. Jesus was the fulfillment for the legal system of God. This old legal system came to a finish, and was rendered powerless because of the weakness of man’s ability to do these laws. This Ended the dreadful slavishness of the law that could not be kept. (Romans 8:1)

Now we have the spirit of God inside us, because of this new covenant of love that is superior to the old covenant. Jesus, our High Priest, being the final sacrifice, completed the need for ongoing sacrifices for sins. Now the new covenant legal system is written in our minds, and on our hearts. These legal thoughts written in our minds refers to the royal law of love (Matthew legal22:37–40), the perfect law of liberty (James 1:25) and the law of faith. (Romans 3:27) When Gods new laws of love come forth in your mind, you will love people supernaturally and without reservation. This is a special operation in our minds by the Spirit of God, helping us to live by His new system of love to our fellow man, doing no harm to others as we walk after the Spirit and NOT the old flesh operated legal system. (Romans 8:1-5)

Love | the New Legal System

Beloved, you are no longer under the old covenant legal system; you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels. (Hebrews 12:18, 22) We are in the perfect law of liberty, being showered in His love and grace. With a new covenant legal system of love, we can live with a life of freedom, by the Spirit of God living in us and guiding us.
